I wanted to have a small version of the small loot safe that's found all over in the new Borderlands 4 video game. This model is based closely on the game design. However, it doesn't include all of the wear and tear details found in the game, to keep the model simpler to print. I used five filament colors: light grey, dark grey, black, red, and green. Not all colors are used in any single object, so you can easily print this with a four color printer.
What will you store in your loot safe? Cash? Eridium? Ammo? Small weapons?
Printing:
Model files are grouped into folders for each piece that should be printed with different colors as single objects: Safe Main Body, Safe Main Body Back, Side Sliders, Control Panel, Left Door, and Right Door. The files not included in folders can be printed individually. If you don't have a multi-color printer, the files in the folders can be printed as single objects and painted later.
Load the files from each folder as a single object in your slicer software, assign appropriate colors for each part, then orient for best printing. All parts can be oriented to print without any supports needed.
All parts print best at 0.15mm height. However, the Safe Main Body can be printed at 0.25mm height for a faster print. A height range modifier can be used at the hinges to decrease the layer height if needed for a smoother look.
Assembly:
This model uses 1.75mm filament for the door hinges and for alignment of some of the parts during assembly. I strongly suggest using PETG filament for the hinges to prevent it from cracking over time.
Use two pieces of filament to align the Safe Main Body Back with the Safe Main Body and glue them together. Then glue the four Slider pieces into the recessed areas on the left and right side of the Safe Main Body.
Glue the Control Panel into the recessed space in the Left Door. See the photos here for the correct orientation of the panel.
Use two pieces of filament for each of the rod halves that slot into the top and bottom of both the Left and Right doors. Use glue to keep the pieces in place once inserted. The slightly longer rod piece sticks out from the door, the slightly shorter piece is recessed. There is a specific orientation needed to align both doors properly and appear like the video game model. See the photos for guidance.
Use very shallow pieces of filament to align the Left and Right Door Interior pieces onto the Left and Right doors. The Left door and Left Interior have a small letter "L" imprint to make sure you use the correct sides. Glue these pieces together.
Assemble the doors with the main safe body once all glue has fully cured by inserting a length of 1.75mm filament from the bottom of each door. Cut the filament flush with the door bottom once you've tested the fit.
The doors will require a bit of pressure to push into a fully closed position. This is by design and is another reason I suggest PETG for the hinge filament. The Left door, with the attached control panel, has a small notch that will "click" into place to hold both doors closed.
