This hummingbird feeder supports video and picture taking by preventing the feeder movement in the wind.  Video capturing software can then reliably detect motion near the feeder.  The feeder uses a PET soft drink/water bottle as the nectar reservoir.  Two feeder bases designed for PCO 1810 bottle thread or a PCF 38P thread, see attached comparison picture.

FIles include:

  • a feeder stand which can be mounted to a post,

  • a ant moat cup that's filled with water to prevent ants reaching the hummingbird nectar,

  • 6 Port feeder,

  • and 6 "flowers"

Printed in PCTG to be more UV resistant. The 6 Port feeder and flowers should be printed with build plate supports.

For the ant moat and 6 port base to be water tight:

  • check the print seam gap setting, I used -120%

  • Perimeters - 3

  • Top contact Z distance: 0.1 detachable

  • Filament extrusion multiplier: 1.07 (running the PCTG at 270C and a 90C bed)

  • Infill/perimeters overlap: 25%

Perch is positioned so it facilitates hummingbirds sitting at a feeding port, unfortunately this results in the perch several mm above the print bed, requiring supports.

I wanted the feeder to be stationary so the fit between the 6 port base and the post bracket is tight to reduce  wind vibrations and motion.  I used a 5/8" or 16mm forstener bit to clean up the port base mounting hole and sandpaper on the top 30 mm of the post to smooth out the filament ridges.

Update #1:

  • Found the PCTG droops a bit in warm sun, so I updated the bracket to be stiffer.  It now has a thicker base and internal 100% infill sections to prevent the weight of the feeder from deforming the base.

Update #2:

  • The original feeder base design with the PCO 1810 threads (on the left in the comparison picture) is ok but the neck is narrow and difficult to clean.  Also the bottle sides were thin and more flexible than I would prefer, causing the ports to drip.   (labeled: 6 Port Base V3.1)

  • I found stiffer bottles with larger diameter neck that allows for a easier cleanup.  The threads are a  PCF 38p design with 2 starts.  It twists on in a single turn.  The exterior of the bottle cap measures 40 mm by 12mm tall.  The first  photo shows a 310 ml bottle and the second photo is a 590 ml. (labeled: 6 Port Base 38P V1)
