Close Encounters of the Glowing Kind

Turn your boring marbles into Glowing Alien Orbs with this UFO-inspired design.

I've had this idea in the back of my head for years, and when I saw the Printables contest, I finally decided to make it real.

My son's marble run set came with glow in the dark marbles and a tiny UV light.  Cool but I knew the experience could be way better, so I decided to Supercharge it.  High output UV flashlight, auto-charging, swirling lights, ultra-bright glowing marbles... let's go!

I designed it as a standalone desktop invasion, or as a piece in your wildest marble run setup.   It's so bright you don't even need to turn the lights off.

Take Me to Your Marble Run

I designed it to fit this marble run set.  The sets include glow marbles, or you can order glow marbles separately on their same listing:

Designed to hold this UV flashlight*:

*Per the flashlight manufacturer: “Do not stare at the operating light source.”

Schematics

Works well on Standard 0.2mm layer print settings, but the marble will spiral longer on a smoother surface.

To balance print time and spiral time, you can bump the layer height down in just the dish area, see image below.  I use 0.2 in the white areas, and 0.08 (overkill) in the green areas, with short transitions above and below.

Have fun with colors and color blocking.  White gives a soft glow, silver for a classic UFO, glow filament is ultra bright with the UV light.  My favorite combination is black bottom half, translucent top half, and translucent Beam Stand.

If you're printing translucent, use Seam Painting to keep the internal and external seams on the back side of the print, so the light doesn't make them more visible.

If using with compatible marble run, you only need the Saucer and Flashlight Mount.

If you want an all-in-one assembly, also print Funnel and Beam Stand.

Enjoy!  And post your Makes so I can see your favorite color combinations and crazy marble run builds!
