About this remix

The Rugged Box (Parametric) by Whity is an excellent, robust design that is particularly well-engineered. However, when using it to create small-sized boxes, particularly with heights below 20 mm, I encountered certain geometric limitations.

Since modifications were necessary, I took the opportunity to add a feature I've long desired: the ability to freely define the number of hinges and latches.

This version preserves the spirit of the original model while offering greater flexibility for small boxes and custom configurations.

Key improvements

Variable number of hinges, latches and lateral ribs

New parameters allowing you to define:

  • The number of hinges and latches

  • The number of lateral ribs

When the box dimensions and screw length are compatible, elements are automatically generated and evenly distributed along the model's length and width.

Optimization for low heights

  • Proper geometric adaptation for box or lid heights below 20 mm

  • Removal of unnecessary ribs when available space doesn't allow for their integration

  • Automatic geometry updates without requiring manual modifications

Latches adapted to small dimensions

For particularly low boxes:

  • Latch height adjusts automatically

  • The mechanism remains functional while maintaining minimal footprint

Available parameters

Original parameters from Whity remain accessible:

  • InnerBoxDepth: inner width of the box

  • InnerBoxWidth: inner length of the box (hinge and latch axis)

  • InnerBoxHeight: inner height of the lower part

  • InnerLidHeight: inner height of the lid

  • ScrewLength: screw length

  • HingeLatchOffset: distance between hinges/latches and inner wall

  • RibOffset: distance of outer side ribs from inner wall

New parameters:

  • NumberOfLatch: number of hinges and latches

  • NumberOfRib: number of outer side ribs

Recommended screws

Although screw diameter remains customizable, I strongly recommend using M3 screws, as in the original model. They offer:

  • An excellent balance between footprint and strength

  • Better compatibility with low-height boxes

To preserve hinge durability, it's advisable to use screws longer than 20 mm whenever possible.

Total number of screws needed: NumberOfLatch × 3

Important

Warning messages

Warning messages in Fusion 360 When updating the model after parameter modifications, Fusion 360 may display warnings or reconstruction errors. This is expected behavior.

Certain functions are used only for specific dimension ranges or for a given number of hinges and latches. If a configuration is incompatible (insufficient width, unsuitable screw length, etc.), the result will be immediately visible on the model and generally requires no further correction.

Automatic height management

When InnerLidHeight is greater than InnerBoxHeight, the model automatically reverses the two values. This constraint is necessary because latch length (lever and screw distance) depends directly on the lower box geometry. Base height is therefore prioritized to ensure optimal closure system operation.

Example of tiny box

The photos display a printed specimen with the following parameters to illustrate small sized box:

  • InnerBoxDepth = 30 mm

  • InnerBoxWidth = 30 mm

  • InnerBoxHeight = 9 mm

  • InnerLidHeight = 9 mm

  • ScrewLength = 20 mm

  • NumberOfLatch = 1

  • NumberOfRib = 1

The seal was printed in TPU 95A. However, a more flexible material is recommended to reduce the effort required for latch closure.

Printing

Box and lid

  • Standard settings

  • No supports needed

Latch

For improved mechanical resistance:

  • PETG recommended

  • 4 outer perimeters
