A pair of soft jaws for the Record No. 3 (4 inch) bench vice, designed to protect work-pieces that would be easily marked by bare metal jaws.

Material / Printing Printed in eSUN ABS using multi-line infill for strength - see the screen grab. These are consumables by design — when they wear out, just print another pair.

If you print these, a photo helps others know they work. Consider sharing your choice of material and print settings — particularly infill, as I may have overdone that one.

Magnets 18×2mm magnets hold the jaws in place. Use minimal glue so the magnets can be recovered and reused when you print a replacement pair.

Fit Modeled to suit a 4 inch bench vice such as the Record No. 3. The magnet positions are deliberately offset to avoid the jaw screws, which are slightly recessed on my vice. Check the STEP files before printing if you want to adapt them to a different vice.

Future Development A TPU insert using the beam interlocking feature would be a useful addition for even softer clamping — noted for a future revision.

Photos The vice in the photos is a vintage Record No. 3 in need of a refurbishment — which is exactly how I came by it. The soft jaws work just as well on a pristine one.

Found this useful? These Soft-jaws went through a few iterations before I was happy with them. If you want to contribute to the next round of testing for the next project, it’s always appreciated: buymeacoffee.com/ChrisNZL
