For a while I've wanted to replace the I3's bowden tube extruder, mainly to be able to print flexible filaments. I don't really want to buy a new stepper motor and extruder of this anchient machine, but some other people have already designed a mount that places the extruder directly above the hot-end. The only problem with this design is that the stepper and filament feed tube will foul the frame of the printer. When I tried this, my z-axis maximum was just 125mm.
The solution I settled on is to tilt the extruder backwards, effectively avoiding the top frame as much as possible. There is still a reduction in printable height, but on my setup I ended up with a z-axis maximum of about 186mm. I strongly advise you check what your printable height will be, rather than just using my number.
