OVERVIEW
This project contains split versions of my IDPA equipment check boxes for printers that cannot accommodate the full-size one-piece models.
Each box is divided into four printable components that are assembled using M4 heat-set inserts, M4 screws, and two printed reinforcement plates. Once assembled, the finished dimensions are intended to match the original one-piece design.
The dimensions are based on the current IDPA Match Administration Rules for BUG, CCP, and SSP/ESP/CO/CDP equipment boxes.
⸻
MECHANICAL COMPATIBILITY
Box | Supported Divisions |
|---|---|
BUG | Backup Gun |
CCP | Compact Carry Pistol |
SSP / ESP / CO / CDP | Shared full-size equipment box |
⸻
DESIGN GOALS
Goal | Engineering Rationale |
|---|---|
Smaller print volume | Allows large IDPA boxes to be printed on smaller printers. |
Preserve dimensions | Maintain the same assembled dimensions as the original one-piece boxes. |
Simple assembly | Uses only common M4 hardware and printed reinforcement plates. |
High stiffness | Reinforcement plates distribute load across the assembly joints. |
⸻
SPECIFICATIONS

BILL OF MATERIALS (BOM)
Qty | Item | Specification | Recommended Source |
|---|---|---|---|
16 | M4 Heat-Set Inserts | 6 mm | Ruthex, CNC Kitchen, McMaster-Carr |
16 | M4 Socket Head Screws | 8 mm | McMaster-Carr, Misumi, Amazon |
⸻
FILES INCLUDED
File | Purpose |
|---|---|
BUG Body | Four body sections for the BUG box |
BUG Plate 1 & Plate 2 | Reinforcement plates for the BUG box |
CCP Body | Four body sections for the CCP box |
CCP Plate 1 & Plate 2 | Reinforcement plates for the CCP box |
CO / SSP / ESP / CDP Body | Four body sections for the full-size competition box |
CO / SSP / ESP / CDP Plate 1 & Plate 2 | Reinforcement plates for the full-size competition box |
⸻
ASSEMBLY
Print all four body sections for the desired box size.
Print the corresponding Plate 1 and Plate 2 reinforcement pieces.
Install the M4 heat-set inserts into each body section.
Assemble the four body sections using the printed reinforcement plates and M4 × 8 mm screws.
Verify the assembled dimensions before using the box for equipment inspection.
Because dimensional accuracy is critical for IDPA equipment checks, I recommend measuring the completed assembly with calipers after assembly. Printer calibration, material shrinkage, and assembly technique can all influence the final dimensions.
⸻
RECOMMENDED PRINT SETTINGS
Setting | Value |
|---|---|
Material | PETG recommended |
Nozzle Diameter | 0.4 mm |
Layer Height | 0.20 mm |
Wall Count | 4 |
Infill | 20–30% Gyroid or Cubic |
Supports | None |
Print Orientation | As Modeled |
⸻
TESTING / VALIDATION
The split design uses printed reinforcement plates on both sides of each joint to increase stiffness while maintaining the overall dimensions of the original one-piece design.
After assembly, I recommend verifying all critical dimensions with calipers before relying on the box for match equipment inspections. The current IDPA Match Administration Rules specify allowable dimensional tolerances for firearm test boxes used during equipment checks.
⸻
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
Future revisions will remain dimensionally compatible with the original one-piece IDPA boxes while improving ease of assembly and expanding support for additional printer sizes.
