Boombox inspired by vintage 80s boomboxes which include such design features as fake vents on the sides and fake hex drive cap head screws . For use as a portable Bluetooth speaker.  The speaker holes and screw whole pattern are for Dayton 3/4 Tweeter, 2-1/2" woofer  and an extra passive radiator for AliExpress which I had a spare (see parts list).  The front whole matches a specific Bluetooth module I found on AliExpress as well(see pars list).  these can all be reconfigured in CAD to suit your parts .

Printing

  • Print woofRings, handleLinks,  handle and tweetGrls in sliver silk PLA

  • Print woofGrills in black

  • Print everything else red or the color of your choosing

NOTICE !!!! Bowties are directional !!!!

They are tapered so the angle of the inside corners become more acute from the back face to the front face.  This is so when you push them into the dove tails they pull the joining pieces together.  The bowties join pieces that are at perpendicular to each other. I put a drop of CA glue to keep it joined.

Assembly

Build the left side , right side and middle sections . (see photos)

Screw hole sizes are designed for mostly M3 self tapping screws . The woofers are held in place with M4 self tapping screws . the handle is held together and attached with M4 machine screws. The Bluetooth module is held in place with black hex drive M4 machine screws . The holes in the model for the Bluetooth module are threaded as M4

The plates with the four screw holes , tie the left side , right side and middle sections together with screws M3 self tapping no longer than 8mm.(see photos)

The back pieces are tied together by the passive radiator screwed into them (M3 self tapping). A XT60 connector fits in a hole for power and charging. A 4 pin female DuPont connector fits in the little square hole in the middle for a programming connection to the ADAU1701 DSP board

Captive nuts(M4) are slid into the two slots on the handle and the right and left handle links are attached with M4 machine screws into those captive nuts.

Captive nuts(M4) are also slid into the top of the enclosure on the sides from below the top surface  (see photo) . If you have trouble getting the nut in place , I found pushing it into place with a soldering Iron works as a last resort.  The handle is attached with M4 machine screws that are driven through the top of the enclosure , through the handle links and into the captive nuts .

The enclosure is sealed with E6000 glue using a 3d printed nozzle from the inside. I also sealed all the holes in the Bluetooth module where air can escape out the enclosure .

The woofer is screwed in with M4 self tapping screws and the tweeters with M3.

You don't need to use the same electronics I did. There are many Bluetooth models on AliExpress that have built-in amplifiers which makes the electronics much simpler.

The electronics I utilized in my project and how they are connected is elaborate and could be a github post itself. At a high level the Bluetooth module is connected to a adau1701 DSP board with 4 channel output to 4 TPA3116d2 amplifier boards that drive the tweeters and woofer separately . the DSP does the crossover filtering among other enhancements. the rotary encoders on top are connected the GPIO pins of the DSP board with one of the momentary switches of one of the rotary encoders wired to a power latching circuit so the device can be turned on and off by pressing the rotary encoder down. I added this because I forgot to add a power switch to the model. The battery is the typical 3s 18650 with a BMS. I use a current controlled power supply to charge them.

The back is attached with M3 self tapping screws of any reasonable length. I was thinking of adding a TPU gasket here.
