This is a design of an OpenPrintTag system with a generic reusable tagplate and a parametric insert adapter for your filament of choice.

There are already OpenPrintTag holders for several brands and types of filaments, but I wanted a system where the OpenPrintTag is 100% reusable, with an easy way to get the tag holder for a specific filament spool. The system consists of 2 parts:

  • The tagplate which has a fixed size and could be reused on every filament spool (maybe except some exotic ones that I do not know of).

  • The insert goes into the spool and secures the tagplate to the filament. I liked this light model for a spool adapter, so I also made a design with a snap in connection. The insert can be adjusted.

The system is a full parametric model made in FreeCad, the source file is also included. You can make your own inserts with this file.

To install the tag on the spool, first place the insert on a flat surface. Slide the tagplate over the insert and fit the tag onto the insert by aligning the 3 extended parts. Finally place the spool over the insert until the snaps click in place on the edge of the spool. To remove, press the snaps inwards until the insert falls out.

How to use the FreeCad model

In the FreeCad file, go to the spreadsheet and change the Spool internal Diameter and the Spool Width. The model is suitable for a maximum internal diameter of 57 mm. Give the exact dimensions, the Cad model will be updated including a 0,20 mm tolerance. The insert will be adjusted to the given dimensions, the plate will remain the same.

Export the Plate and Insert as step or stl file and import them in your slicer.

The spreadsheet also contains design parameters and calculated values for the insert and tagplate. Changes the design parameters if you want to make other adjustments to the model. For example, by changing some dimensions and tolerance you could make the model suitable for larger diameters then the 57 mm stated above. Do not change the  calculated values, the model needs them to update correctly.

Included model files

I have included model files (3mf and step) for the following spools.

Spool

Internal Diameter

Width

Prusament "old" spool without OPT

51 mm

68 mm

Esun basic PLA cardboard spool

54 mm

63,5 mm

Polymaker Polyterra cardboard spool

55 mm

66 mm

The models can be printed with PETG or PLA, without supports or other changes. PETG is a bit more flexible, which is better for the snaps, but both should be fine.

Feedback

I hope you enjoy this model. If you want me to add other spools / model files, send me the dimensions and make of the spool. I will add the step and 3mf to the model files.
