1/200 scale model of the Silbervogel (Silver Bird) design by Eugen Sanger with rocket sled launch system.
Information sourced from A ROCKET DRIVE FOR LONG RANGE BOMBERS by Eugen Sanger and J. Bredt originally published in 1944. My copy is an English translation which is available free as a pdf on the internet. Additional technical details are from the book SPACESHIP HANDBOOK by Jack Hagerty and Jon C. Rogers.
Printing:
If making the rocket plane only, just print the body, wings, and tail pieces. Printing the plane parts with a reduced layer height will minimize the stair step effect. 3mf project files are included which have the orientations and supports that I used.
Body - Place on print bed diagonally to fit on bed. Length is 280 mm.
Left and right wings - Place on bed with the bottom wing surface flat on the bed and the shorter part that fits under the body angled up and printed with supports. Some sanding to clean up the supported surfaces may be needed.
Left and right tail - Place upright on bed, no supports needed.
Sled - Place on print bed diagonally to fit on bed. Print upside down with the large flat surface on the bed. Organic supports needed. Length is 280 mm
Sled Drive - Print upright.
Xfer blocks - Print on side. They are both the same. One goes between the sled drive and the sled and the other goes between the rocket plane and the sled.
Slide rail - This part is too long (439 mm) to fit on the bed. This part will need to be split. I used the dowel setting and placed 3 locations with a diameter of 1.8 mm. I didn't actually print the dowels and cut them from a roll of filament instead.
Assembly:
The wings and tail parts will need to be glued to the body.
The 2 halves of the slide rail will need to be glued using short pieces of filament as dowels to mate the parts together.
The sled slides over the rail oriented with the shorter gap to the front and underneath the plane.
the xfer blocks can be glued into the pockets in the top of the sled. These locate and orient the plane and drive.
