Long-lived condom demonstration dummy! 🍆
Greater learning, a fraction of the price!
1 Description
The dummy is designed with a penis as inspiration, but without 100% anatomical correctness. The dummy has the following measurements:
Total height: 140 mm
Height (shaft+head): 125 mm
Diameter (shaft): 34 mm
Diameter (head at thickest): 35 mm
Diameter (base): 70 mm
2 Design process
The dummy is a collaborative effort between Herning's Central Makerspace and the municipal Health Visitors (sunehedsplejen) of Herning. The purpose was to replace the current polysytrene dummies with a more sustainable and cost-beneficial solution.
The 3D printed dummy is designed with the input of healthcare professionals (the HVs), and strikes a balance between anatomical approximation and the pedagogical purpose of demonstrating proper condom use. As such, the surface texture and dimensions both take the effect on self-image into consideration, while prioritizing the primary purpose.
3 Pedagogical use cases
3.1 Proper condom use
The dummy's primary use is for sex education in folkeskolen (upper middle school/lower high school level), where it is used to demonstrate proper condom use. It is intended as a learning tool for the HVs, who can bring a class set (~30 dummies) with them to whatever class they may be called out to.
3.2 Showcasing diversity
When exposed to heat at near-melting point, the dummies can also be hand-shaped into shapes/dimensions, that deviate from the original model. These warped models are then a talking point, that showcases anatomical diversity, and spreading the message that not everyone is the same.
If printed with PLA, the model can be made malleable with a heat gun, by being soaked in hot water, or right after having been washed in a dishwasher running a program of at least 60°C. You can then squeeze, pull, and more to shape the model. I recommend wearing dishwashing gloves.
3.3 Cleaning protocol
One of the primary pain points of the polystyrene dummies, is that they cannot easily be cleaned without breakage. The 3D printed dummy has no such issue. As such, there are three different ways of cleaning the models:
Use alcohol wipes on the dummies after use.
Handwash them with a sponge and dishwashing soap in lukewarm water.
Wash them in a dishwasher running with the eco setting or a program that washes at less than 60°C.
These cleaning protocols will vary depending on the filament used. These are based on dummies printed with PLA.
4 Print settings
The dummies have been printed on a Prusa MK4S with standard settings:
Infill: 15%
Layer height: 0.2 mm
Perimeters: 2
Support: None
Brim: None
Material: Generic PLA
For a set of 30 dummies, we printed in six different colours, fitting five dummies per print plate (more can be fitted on a single plate).
Note on colour choice: We avoided white, black, brown, and tan filaments, as these can resemble skin colours which could invite disruptive discourse during use (one of the sets in the pictures was intended to be transparent, but ended up unintentionally white).

I cannot stress this enough: This is NOT a sex toy or a medical device, and should, under no circumstances, be inserted into any orifice. It is a purely educational tool.
