Background Information

A big part of this remixe is based on code for another parametric build tray I worked on. This new remix based on Polymorphic's design aims to give makers the same creative freedom that I implemnented with my original remix parametric design, while keeping the modularity of Polymorphic's design.

How to use the .scad file

Run the file and generate new buld trays with OpenSCAD. Once you have OpenSCAD installed all you would need to do is decompress the .zip file and open either the Modular_Build_Tray.scad or Modular_Build_Tray_V2.scad file from the newly decompressed folder, and make your desired modifications to make your own modular build tray.

What's Included

There are two versions of the OpenSCAD file. V2 allows users to freely choose how many colums they wish to add, but might be unstable. I also included additional sample modules to help get you started. Feel free to use them as you wish.

Update July 8, 2026 (New Fillet and Gridfinity Adapter)

Howdy all, not a huge update to the project, but I did add a few new features that hopefully should be useful for your maker needs. The biggest of which is an adapter to make the build tray compabibile with Gridfinity's ecosystem. Users can now also generate fillets in the smaller modules.

Update July 13, 2026 (New Sub-Tray Size Options)

Hey all, new update for the Parametric Build tray has been released today. I saw that Polymorphic added two new sub-tray sizes for there build tray. In addition to making the new 1x2 and 1x4 trays customizable, I've also added four new tray sizes of my own creation including 1x1, 1x3, 2x3, and 3x3 modules. All of which are customizable via the Parametric program.

Update August 10, 2026 (Fully Scalable Bins and Custom Push-In lables)

Howdy all, it has been a little bit of a month since I've updated the OpenSCAD files, and their have been a few new contributions by BJStudios to the main Polymorphic project, which I wanted to implement into the OpenSCAD project with additional customization. Users can now scale up the main tray into a storage bin with a 200 mm x 200 mm footprint. Users can also generate a push-in lable for the build tray with custom text.

August 19, 2026 (New Modular Mats)

Howdy all, I've been working a bit on version 6 of the OpenSCAD. Now the version I'm currently working on is still extremely experimental, so it's still a bit off from public release, but I do want to share the new feature that I'm very excited about. Version 6 introduces the ability to scale up the main tray to be as long or as wide as you wish to create a modular organizational mat.

At the moment the largest tray you can print has a foot print of 491 mm by 491 mm, but I will find a way so that the larger mats can be printed in multiple parts for smaller printers.

September 11, 2026 (Version Six is out now)

Version Six with the new scalable build trays have been tested and are ready for use!

September 25, 2026 (Version Seven is out with new compact main trays)

Version Seven is out. This version grants users the ability to create new compact main trays without compromising the ability to use most of the core modules. Currently their is a known issue with the main ribbed tray, which will be fixed at a later date. Other than that everything is ready for use.
