This mod adds a swiveling support arm to the Creality Ender 5 Max to prevent cable sag. The stock cable has a habit of falling down below the gantry and could potentially snag on a print, so this mod was developed to prevent that.
NOTE: This mod is NOT currently compatible with my lid riser mod. If you intend to use the lid riser mod, you may want to wait to install it until it has been updated with a compatible version.
Hardware Required:
Original support post from the printer (remove the T shaped bit at the top)
M5x12 Button Head Cap Screw (BHCS)
M5 Washer
M5 Heat Set Insert
M4x8 BHCS
M4 Washer
M3x6 BHCS (optional, but recommended)
M3 Heat Set Insert (optional, but recommended)
608RS (or other 608) bearing (you can find these HERE)
3ft Nylon Zip Tie (which you can find HERE) <-- I recommend a smaller pack if you can find it, but these worked great for me.
Printing The Parts:
Note 1, When printing these parts, it is recommended to use PETG at a minimum to prevent the parts from creeping over time. ABS/ASA is recommended.
Note 2, Only the Support Arm (the one with the big round hole for the bearing) needs any supports during printing. All other components will print without supports. Do NOT forget to add supports to the hole where the bearing goes!
Basic Assembly:
After printing all the parts (double check you've got all of them), install the M5 Heat Set Insert into the Cable Support Riser using a soldering iron.
Press the 608RS bearing into the recess in the bottom of the Cable Support Arm, which should be a tight fit. If the fit is loose, check to make sure your printer is correctly calibrated and adjust XY hole compensation if necessary.
Use your soldering iron to install the M3 heat set insert in the side of the Support Arm, if you are going to.
Use your M5x12 screw (and optional spacer) to attach the Support Arm to the top of the Support Riser.
Rotate the original cable support post on the printer so that a corner of the hexagon shaped body faces directly forward. This is important, as the Support Riser will be a snug fit over it.
Press the Support Riser & Support Arm assembly down over the original support post until it is flush with the frame of the printer. Use your M4x8 screw and washer to secure it to the post.
Attach the Toolhead Support (front and back) pieces to the cable above the toolhead using 4 small zip ties. It should connect easily on either side of the bend in the cable.
Take one of your 3ft nylon zip ties and pass it through the loop on the side of the Toolhead Support, making sure the SMOOTH side faces outwards (towards the front).
Place the 4 or 5 Cable Clips over the 3ft zip tie, with the open side facing inwards. See images above for reference.
Measure where the zip tie overlaps the hole for the M3x6 screw, and trim it (leaving a little extra). Drill a hole here for the screw and secure it in place.
NOTE: Make SURE you position the toolhead as far away from the support post as you can, and that the zip tie is long enough to allow everything to move freely. Move the toolhead to all 4 corners of the frame after you connect the 3ft zip tie with the screw to be sure it isn't too short.Run the toolhead cable along the inside (open side) of the Cable Clips and secure it in place at each one with a small zip tie. These clips can slide a little, so don't worry about positioning them perfectly right now.
Zip tie the toolhead cable to the Support Arm as shown in the images above, and make sure it has enough slack on the back side to rotate freely.
Run the PTFE tube through all of the loops in the Cable Clips and reconnect it to the toolhead.
Make sure your installation matches the images shown above, and give it a test by manually moving the toolhead to all of the corners. If everything moves freely and does not snag, then you should be ready to go.
