I use this jig a lot! If you do segmented pen blank creation and need consistent thickness cuts (for instance, in herringbone patterns or accent pieces), this thing is for you.
Printing: Print all components ideally using PETG, 25% gyroid infill, 5 wall loops. This will make a strong jig with minimal flex, especially when it comes to the mating surfaces that need to hold during sawing operations
Assembly:
You will need to take a piece of scrap plywood and attach a miter slot runner to it to index your jig to the saw. I use plastic runners for convenience but you can also use a scrap piece of t-slot in a pinch without issue.
This model was made to use a single commonly available 1/4"-20 bolt, washer, and nut to make the knob/stopblock/base assembly work properly. 1-1/4" length should work fine here. Put this assembly together first and ensure proper movement as the bolt will be captured once the jig is screwed to the base that you made in step 1.
Once those have been put together, #10 pan head wood screws anchor the jig to the base. 1" length should be fine here. It is crucial that you index the slot in the slabbing jig parallel to the miter slot. You must also move the stop block all the way to the left and ensure this is against the blade when mounting. Failure to do so will yield incorrect thickness results. I did this by running my base through the blade halfway to establish a kerf cut which made the jig a lot easier to index to the blade. This is not the only way, just how I did so. Ensure proper clearances and operation before proceeding any further.
Use:
The offset for your cut is determined by the hashmarks in the base compared to the single line on the stop block. These increments are 1/16" and you can probably get 1/32" resolution by lining up the stop block line between hash marks in the base.
Make sure the knob locks down the stop block and that it does not have any movement. Just to be sure, you may want to check this every few cuts until you are comfortable with the operation.
As with any woodworking tool, keep your booger pickers away from the booger picker removers (keep your fingers clear of the blade).
I hope you enjoy this jig, and use it to create something amazing!
