I needed a portable Jellyfin server for a trip and was on a tight schedule, so I threw this together using parts I had on hand. It’s a little rough around the edges, but it works!

The Hardware: Raspberry Pi 5 (16GB), a 3.5" CYD with a 3000mAh battery, an NVMe HAT, and a power bank. The case is split into two sections that snap together using 13x3mm magnets.

It operates in two distinct modes:

🚗 Car Mode: The Pi broadcasts its own Wi-Fi hotspot. It doesn't provide internet, but it gives everyone in the car access to the Jellyfin media library via their own devices. To make connecting foolproof, the CYD features a swipeable UI with a QR code you can scan to join the network. The screen also acts as a system dashboard, a "now playing" monitor, and has quick options to reboot or shut down.

🏨 Hotel Mode: Plug the Pi into a hotel TV via HDMI, and the system automatically changes modes. The CYD UI switches to a media remote, and because the case is magnetic, you can detach the screen from the Pi and use the remote wirelessly from across the room.

The GitHub for the project is here.
