When I printed the JeepingJohnny circular knitting machine, one of the most expensive components were the needles! I wanted to be sure I didn't lose any and I wanted them to be organized so swapping between the different cylinders would be a breeze. So, I designed this organizers with the following characteristics:

  • Sliding lid that keeps the needles in place

  • Channel for the jut-outs to lay in

  • An angled open face to make needle removal fast/easy

  • Fits all needles (50 ribber needles or 100 cylinder needles based on model)

My initial design did not include a lock. This is functional and great. When it's full of needles, life is GREAT. BUT, if you shake it around a ton, the needles can turn 90 degrees and shake out. It did take quite a few shakes for a needle to come out, but I didn't want to lose ANY. So, I made a version that includes a lock.

The lock version has a small part that fits into slots on the top and on the bottom backside of the channel. The lock is NOT secure until you put on the lid. When you slide on the lid, the lock cannot lift up or shift back and your needles are then locked in place. If you are unable to manage very small part from a dexterity perspective the lock may not be for you, but like I said the regular box was OK as long as you aren't treating them like salt and pepper shakers. When the box is full, the little lock piece will fit behind the needles in the channel.

I am a new 3D printer/modeler (only a few weeks into it) so while this did print fine, I did have to sand the top of the channel to get the slider in. This is due to the filament drooping on the overhang. If you want to ensure a perfect fit straight out of the printer I would consider a lower threshold for overhand supports. I printed without supports and this was my reality. Someone more experienced than I am is WELCOME to add print recommendations in the comments!
