What it is

This is a protective frame to be used when tray-developing sheets of 4x5 film. It's intended to protect the front and back surfaces of the film from accidental scratches while you are developing it.  Much x-ray film, in particular, is coated with a fragile emulsion on both surfaces, and trying to develop it without scratching is tricky at best. This little frame holds the film a few mm above the bottom of the developing tray. It still allows circulation of the developer.

How to use in the darkroom

Use 2 of them to hold one sheet. The bottom of the frame has multiple (20) "feet", while the top face just has a few tabs to hold the film in place. Place the film between the tabs, and snap the second frame face-to-face to the first - see the photos.  They snap pretty firmly, so try it out in the light to ensure you know how to pop them together. Tray develop your film with whatever developer, fixer, and wash you prefer.

The corners have a 45º cut and a little chamfer. This might give you a place to stick your fingernail into to separate the two halves when it's time to remove the film. Separate the halves carefully so you don't scratch the film!

How to print

Print pairs of these. Print them with the feet down out of pretty much anything - PLA, PETG both work fine. I prefer to print them with solid infill (or many perimeter walls) so they'll sink in the developing tray and won't take on much liquid.

Release 2 Sept. 8 2026

I've updated the model file with a few changes to make it easier to snap it firmly together and easier to unsnap it as well. I find this version holds the film better and is a more reliable holder.  It is not compatible with the earlier version - new and old won't snap together.
