Nucleus Development Hive
This project was created to develop a small hive specifically intended for the development and growth of a bee colony.
The hive has been designed for 3D printing and, in the main version, makes use of practically the entire available print area, while keeping as many components as possible integrated into a single body.
This hive is intended for the development and growth of the colony, not for honey production. Honey production is not the purpose of this project.
01 -- 10 – Monoblock Hive
This is the main body of the hive. The design makes use of practically the entire available print area.
For the landing board, a design compromise was necessary: the landing board is made as a separate insert that is installed afterwards.
Since this is an external component of the hive, if the fit does not provide sufficient stability, I recommend using glue to secure it.
Whenever possible, I prefer to avoid glue and use more natural solutions, such as propolis, while leaving the beekeeper free to choose the fastening method that best suits their needs.
01 -- 06 – Adjustable Entrance Door
The entrance door can be rotated and adjusted according to the beekeeper's needs.
This allows the entrance configuration to be modified according to the requirements of managing the small colony.
01 -- 07 – Roof
The roof closes the upper part of the hive.
If the bees seal the roof too firmly, a cover can be placed between the hive body and the roof.
Alternatively, a simple flat plate can be printed and used as an intermediate element.
01 -- 13 – Divider Board
The divider board allows the available space inside the hive to be managed and therefore makes it possible to gradually accommodate the development of the small colony.
This means that it is not necessary to use the entire available space immediately, allowing the configuration to be adapted to the size of the colony.
01 -- 08 – Frames
The frames have been designed using the standard dimensions of the frames used in traditional hives with super foundation sheets, measuring 410 × 130 mm.
The frames are also equipped with holes intended for the use of tinned wire to secure the wax foundation sheet.
When using tinned wire, care must be taken not to overheat it, in order to avoid damaging or melting the plastic frame.
01 -- 12 – Wax Foundation Cutting Jig
Part 01 -- 12 is an optional print that can be used as a jig for cutting the 410 × 130 mm wax foundation sheet.
The remaining part of the wax foundation sheet does not necessarily need to be considered waste.
Thanks to the bees' ability to build and complete wax comb, the remaining pieces can be placed next to each other and still be used, reducing or avoiding material waste. Naturally, the resulting frame may not be as perfect as the others.
For those who prefer to use a printable paper template, the file 01 -- 12.pdf is also included.
The PDF must be printed at 1:1 scale, without any scaling. Before using it, it is important to check the dimensions of the print: they must measure 410 × 130 mm.

The file Assembly_01 --.pdf shows the various components of the hive and can be used as a reference during assembly.
Design Choice: Colony Development, Not Honey Production
The hive was designed for the development and growth of the colony, not for honey production.
One of the reasons for this choice concerns the 3D-printed plastic frames. Personally, I consider it too risky to use these frames for producing honey intended for consumption, as I would not want to risk having plastic fragments end up in the honey.
Even considering the possibility of filtering the honey, I do not consider this a solution that I am comfortable with.
For this reason, the project was primarily designed as a small hive for colony development, where the frames can be used for managing and growing the colony without being intended for honey extraction.
Project Note
The project was developed based on knowledge and practices from beekeeping, with particular attention to frame dimensions and the possibility of using standard 410 × 130 mm wax foundation sheets.
As with my other beekeeping projects, this model is presented as a 3D-printable project and not as professional equipment that has already been validated through field testing.
