All electronics live in the roof section: an Inhero MR-2 solar repeater board (RAK4630-based, runs MeshCore), a 5×18650 battery pack and a λ/4 ground-plane antenna fully integrated into the roof — radiator through the ridge, four radials in guide grooves. The brood chamber below stays completely free of electronics, so light-colored prints work as a real nest box (Ø 30 mm entrance hole for blue tits & co.).
Measured in the assembled roof: SWR ≈ 1.1 across the 868 MHz band — the enclosure barely detunes the antenna. Power draw is approx. 1 Wh/day; with 3 W of solar on three sides (the vertical front panel keeps producing even with snow on the roof) the node runs year-round. If the battery ever runs empty after long bad-weather spells, the MR-2 deep-sleeps and wakes up on its own once the sun returns.
Print notes
Three parts: base, intermediate floor (tech carrier), roof
Any filament — make sure it is weather- and UV-resistant
Enable automatic supports; additionally add paint-on supports at the top edges of the solar panel cutouts — see the assembly guide for screenshots.
Optional fuzzy skin on the outer walls of base and roof (0.3 mm thickness, 0.8 mm point distance) — hides layer lines, looks great outdoors.
Print the base upright — the layer lines double as a climbing aid for fledglings
Black prints get too hot inside for a brood: permanently close the entrance hole or fill the brood chamber with rot-proof material
