The mechanism uses a dedicated steering servo and a simple linkage to provide positive ground control during taxi, takeoff, and landing. The gear-leg length can be adjusted to suit different airframes, and the mounting plate provides a straightforward way to install the assembly in the aircraft.

This design has been printed, assembled, and tested.

Required Parts

In addition to the printed components, you will need:

Rod Cut List

Cut the rods to the following lengths:

  • 2 × 20 mm

  • 1 × 14 mm

  • 1 × 30 mm

  • 1 × 100 mm for the main gear leg

The 100 mm gear leg can be shortened or replaced with a different length to match your aircraft’s required ground clearance and stance.

Printing Settings

I printed all components using:

  • Material: PETG

  • Infill: 30%

PETG provides a good balance of durability and flexibility for this application. Make sure the parts fit together smoothly before final assembly, and clean or lightly ream the rod and bolt holes if necessary.

Assembly Notes

Test-fit the complete mechanism before installing it in the aircraft. Check that:

  • The steering mechanism moves freely through its full range

  • The wheel remains centered when the servo is centered

  • The linkage does not bind or contact the mounting structure

  • All mounting hardware is secure

  • The gear-leg length provides adequate propeller and fuselage clearance

Use appropriate servo travel limits to avoid forcing the mechanism beyond its available range.

As with any 3D-printed aircraft component, inspect the assembly regularly for cracks, loosened hardware, or damage—especially after a hard landing.
