Optimized Beehive Entrance

I designed this optimized entrance for my beehive to provide a more natural and bee-friendly opening size, similar to what bees prefer in the wild.

The upper edge of the entrance is rounded to make it easier for the bees to crawl in and out without sharp edges getting in the way.

The print is very lightweight and uses less than 10 g of filament. Two versions are included: a one-piece flap and a two-piece split flap.

The flap hinge is designed to stay securely closed and bee-safe when folded upwards. When opened downwards, it stops at a suitable landing angle for the bees.

Assembly is simple: a short piece of filament is used as the hinge pin.

This is a small, practical and easy-to-print upgrade for beekeepers who want a lightweight, optimized and bee-friendly hive entrance.

Recommended Material

For outdoor use, I recommend:

  • PETG (minimum recommendation)

  • ASA (excellent UV and weather resistance)

  • ABS (durable and temperature resistant)

PLA is generally not recommended for long-term outdoor use due to heat and weather exposure.

Print Settings

The model was designed and tested using:

  • PrusaSlicer Structural Profile

  • 0.20 mm layer height

  • Default profile settings

  • No modifications required

Simply slice and print using the standard Structural preset for a strong and reliable part.

Update / Improvements

After extended field observations, I decided to revise the flap design.

I noticed that some bees struggled to climb from the underside of the flap over the front edge onto the landing platform. To improve this transition, an additional rounded edge has been incorporated, making it easier for the bees to access the platform.

The flap assembly has also been improved. The hinge-pin hole was slightly modified, making installation easier and more straightforward while maintaining the original functionality.

Since both versions work well, I have decided to keep the original and the revised versions available. This allows every beekeeper to choose the design they prefer for their own hives.
