Took the idea for the trap trigger from his model, but with a grand-toddler and a puppy in the house I decided to go with a reusable live trap design. One of the joys of living in a house older than my parents is the amazing number of ways mice find their way in. No matter how many times I close up every possible hole I can find, they either find or make more. After months using glue traps with limited success and a few weeks of the 5 gallon bucket trapdoor styles with greater success and larger bother I wanted something that I could empty easily after each mouse. Something easy to print, and relatively disposable if something untoward happened such as a trap being left too long with a mouse in it.
Printed standing up, no supports. I just used PLA, but if the rubber band is too far from the sliding side of the trap it will lean and deform, causing the trap to malfunction. Changing the print orientation of the lid might correct that issue, but that's not something I've bothered to try. I orient the trap for use with the solid lid support up to prevent early triggering by the mice bumping into or stepping on it. It works best on flat surfaces such as wood/laminate flooring but has been used on low pile carpet with success.
Setting the trap is easiest after assembly by pulling the trap open and dropping in the pretzel stick, jiggling lightly until it is oriented diagonally as that seems to work best. Slowly let the pretzel stick take the tension of the rubber band, and I then use a coffee stir stick to add a dab of peanut butter to the middle as extra enticement for the little rodents.
This is not exactly a "Cruelty free" trap, as the mice I've trapped will consistently get their tails caught when the door snaps shut. Particularly if there is more than one mouse, as I have several times caught doubles in one trap. Also not terribly discreet as it is exceedingly loud when it gets triggered.
Rubber band: #64: 3.5"x1/4" 8.9x0.64 cm
Pretzel stick: store brand seems to work fine for my mice, I've used both great value and private selection from my local stores. However if your mice are particularly snooty or refined you may need to use name brand such as rold gold.
