My wife wanted to make an educational game for her class which involved a dice.  The online resource for this game included a foldable paper dice, but unfortunately, paper is unlikely to survive contact with first graders.   I was asked to create something more durable.

This dice has removable/replaceable  face inserts, which can be printed on a regular printer,  and can then be secured into place using the removable edges.   Down the road, the faces can be easily replaced with other images for other units and games.

The edges friction fit into place with sufficient force to prevent a child from prying them loose on their own.  These are printed in solid TPU and are chamfered to prevent sharp edges, or having the edges shatter if dropped from a high height.   The chamfer also makes it roll much better.   The center is printed in PLA, with a 15% cubic infill.

I experimented with PETG and some softer TPE (80) for the edges as well, however, these did not work -- the PETG didn't survive being dropped 5 feet onto a concrete floor, and the TPE was too soft.    TPU with a 92A shore hardness seems to work perfectly.

The faces are made from 2"x2" (50mm x 50mm) paper.   These can be laminated for increased durability.   You could alternatively 3d print some faces at 0.6mm thick, with embossed images which would likely look even nicer (but this was for a unit on color, and I sadly didn't have the right colors...).
