The problem it solves:

On a small crew or solo shoot, it's easy to lose track of whether the camera is actually rolling — a quick "wait, are we recording?" moment can cost you the shot. At the same time, cables tend to end up loose and tangled around the rig, with nowhere dedicated to clip them down. And during the quiet moments before a take, your hands just want something to do.🤔

RollFlag solves all three at once with a single cold-shoe-mounted accessory: a hand-twisted red/green flag that shows recording status at a glance, a screw-in point for a cable clip to keep wires tidy, and a satisfying bit of fidget motion built right into the mechanism — all from one small, lightweight mount.

Quick to operate — flip the flag or clip a cable in seconds, no tools needed.

Print Settings🔧:

  • Filament: PETG/ASA/PLA

  • Infill: 15%

  • Supports: No

  • Brim: Yes

  • Lightweight by design — the full RollFlag assembly weighs just 14.6g total (with brim), adding virtually no extra weight to your rig.

    • cold_shoe_foot — 2.16 g

    • connector_screw — 0.26 g

    • flag — 6.59 g

    • flagpole_bottom — 2.35 g

    • flagpole_connector_or_top — 1.77 g

    • mount_stud — 1.51 g

  • Print it with MMU or stick colored paper on it, etc.

Assembly 🛠:

Look at the assembly files. For a quick overview, look at the .stl assembly file, and for detailed information, look at the .step assembly file.

But if you don't understand something or have any questions, feel free to write to me.

Want to make it bigger? Print "flagpole_connector_or_top" several times.

Connection🔩:

The "cold_shoe_foot" slides into any standard cold shoe. The "mount_stud" and connector screw use a standard 1/4"-20 UNC thread.

3D CAD software:

The design was created in Autodesk Fusion. 🖥 I recommend it to everyone!

Cold shoes:

You can find really good cold shoes on kondorblue.com. Screw the mount stud directly into it. Some examples:

You can also buy a simple cold shoe from anywhere. It will be compatible with any camera.
Or you can find cold shoes on printables.com.

Cable clips:

MondoTies Cable Management Clips for Cameras(1/4"-20)

Or any 1/4"-20 threaded cable clamp.

I didn't have my own cable clip, so I searched Printables for one — and found this one by @jannisvd:

Thank you!

Pro tip:

Is it dark on set? Or is the room too big and the flag can't be seen from everywhere? A camera-mounted light can illuminate the flag so everyone can see it.

Give it a spin😃

Thanks for checking out RollFlag! Spin the flag, clip a cable, fidget away — and if you have any feedback or ideas, I'd love to hear them. Happy printing! 🎬
