Mini Floating Weather Station

Assembly Instructions

Parts you should have

Print these six main parts:

  1. 01_float_body.stl — floating base

  2. 02_mast.stl — central mast

  3. 03_sensor_platform.stl — upper platform

  4. 04_wind_vane.stl — wind direction indicator

  5. 05_anemometer.stl — wind-speed rotor

  6. 06_sensor_housing.stl — temperature/humidity sensor cover

The file 07_assembly_reference.stl is a visual reference and is not intended to be printed as the assembled station.

Step 1 — Prepare the parts

Remove the printed parts from the build plate and clean off any brim, stringing or loose material.

Lightly sand any parts that need to slide together. The mast and sensor components should be able to sit straight without excessive force.

Step 2 — Install the mast

Take the mast and the float body.

Insert the bottom of the mast into the raised central boss on top of the float.

Make sure the mast is vertical.

For a permanent model, a small amount of suitable adhesive can be used around the joint.

Step 3 — Attach the sensor platform

Take the sensor platform and place it on top of the mast.

The three support feet should face downward.

Centre the platform over the mast and make sure it is level.

Do not glue it immediately if you want to be able to remove it later.

Step 4 — Install the sensor housing

Place the sensor housing on the sensor platform.

The vented sides should remain exposed to the surrounding air.

Leave some space around the housing so air can circulate freely.

If you later add a real temperature or humidity sensor, mount the electronics inside or underneath the housing while keeping the sensing area ventilated.

Step 5 — Install the wind vane

Take the wind vane and position its centre collar on the upper mast.

The vane should be able to rotate freely.

The pointed end indicates the direction the wind is coming from.

For a real weather station, avoid gluing this part in place.

Step 6 — Install the anemometer

Take the anemometer and place its centre hub on its mounting position near the top of the mast.

Make sure the rotor can spin freely without touching the wind vane or mast.

Again, do not glue the rotating section.

Step 7 — Final check

Check that:

  • The float is sitting level.

  • The mast is vertical.

  • The sensor platform is level.

  • The wind vane rotates freely.

  • The anemometer rotates freely.

  • The sensor housing has open airflow around it.

  • No moving parts rub against each other.

Step 8 — Adding electronics

The model can be adapted for real sensors such as:

  • Temperature sensor

  • Humidity sensor

  • Barometric pressure sensor

  • Wind-speed sensor

  • Wind-direction sensor

Electronics should be mounted securely and protected from direct water exposure.

Important safety and testing note

Before putting the model into a pond, lake or other body of water, test it in a shallow container first.

The printed float may need additional waterproofing, sealing or balancing depending on the filament, print settings and any electronics added.

This STL design has not been tested as a real marine weather station.

(if you want to just have this as a display model, you can print 07_assembly_reference)

(After downloading the files, you will receive a pdf version of these instructions of which you can print)
