Little Lily Crookedstep

Lily Crookedstep loved playing on the stairs.

She would hide beneath the banister, crawl between the steps and call to the adults from somewhere just beyond their sight. Whenever they turned to find her, she was already somewhere else—giggling softly from the floor above.

One evening, Lily leaned too far over the staircase.

Her body fell.

Her laughter did not.

Since then, she has continued her favourite game. She waits upside down upon the steps, her long hair spilling toward the floor, and sweetly asks anyone passing below:

“Would you like to see what I can do?”

Those who ignore her hear tiny footsteps following them through the house for the rest of their lives.

Those who look up see Lily smiling.

And those who accept her invitation suddenly feel the staircase twist beneath their feet. Their bones bend into impossible shapes as Lily leads them downward, one playful step at a time—through floors that should not exist and toward a bottom they will never reach.

They called it childish mischief. The staircase called it hunger.

If you ever hear a little girl giggling above you, do not climb the stairs.

Lily is only playing.

But she has never learned when to stop.
