I made a roomier, 3D-printed version of the FT Tiny Trainer fuselage. Almost the same weight with LW-PLA as original.

This is my roomier, 3D-printed version of the FT Tiny Trainer fuselage. The goal of this project was to create a printable fuselage while keeping the overall weight and flying characteristics as close as possible to the original foamboard FT Tiny Trainer.

For this release, I am publishing the fuselage and motor mount. The aircraft still uses the original FT Tiny Trainer foamboard components, including the 3-channel or 4-channel sport wing, tail surfaces, and other foam parts. Keeping these components foamboard helps reduce the overall weight.

Weight & Testing

The fuselage was tested using LW-PLA. When fully assembled, I found the weight difference between the original all-foamboard Tiny Trainer and the version using the 3D-printed fuselage to be relatively small.

I believe the fuselage could also be printed successfully in standard PLA, although this will naturally make the aircraft heavier. The additional weight may actually be useful when flying in windy conditions.

The Tiny Trainer power setup also provides some flexibility for the additional weight. I have flown this design using a 6-inch propeller and 3S battery setup.

Fuselage Assembly

For additional strength, I glue short sections of BBQ/bamboo skewers across the fuselage joints. These help reinforce the joints while also providing additional surface area for the glue.

The files include a motor mount template, with options for both a foamboard motor mount and a 3D-printed version.

Assembly is fairly straightforward. However, if there is enough interest, I can also create and upload a build video showing the complete assembly process.

3D-Printed Wings

At the moment, I have kept the wings as the original foamboard design to save weight. If there is enough interest, I can design, test, and publish fully 3D-printed wings for the aircraft as well.

Recommended Print Settings

Use your normal PLA or LW-PLA settings for lightweight RC aircraft.

Vase mode is NOT required. The fuselage is designed with thin walls so that it prints in a similar manner to a vase-mode aircraft while using normal printing mode.

I recommend LW-PLA if your priority is keeping the aircraft as close as possible to the weight of the original Tiny Trainer.

If you print and fly one, I’d love to see your build and hear how it performs!
