Little Milo Everstill

Milo Everstill was a patient little boy.

Every afternoon, he sat upon the nursery floor with his knees drawn tightly to his chest, watching his wooden spinning top turn beside him.

He never asked for sweets.
He never asked to go outside.
He only wanted someone to sit with him until the toy stopped.

On the final evening of his life, Milo’s mother placed the top upon the floor and promised she would return before it fell.

She never did.

The servants found Milo the following morning, still curled in the same position. The room had grown bitterly cold, and the little wooden top was still turning beside his body.

It has never stopped.

Now Milo waits in forgotten nurseries, abandoned houses and rooms whose clocks no longer move. If someone enters, he raises his hollow eyes and quietly asks:

“Will you play with me until it falls?”

Those who refuse hear the scraping of the spinning top beneath their beds each night.

Those who agree soon discover that the toy does not spin upon the floor.

It spins upon their remaining time.

With every turn, another hour disappears. Then a day. Then a year. Their hands wrinkle, their memories fade, and their entire unlived future is pulled silently into the wooden toy while Milo watches without moving.

When the top finally begins to wobble, there is almost nothing left of his playmate but the frightened child they once were.

Milo leans closer and whispers:

“Again?”

Then the top rises.

And begins to spin once more.

Every child deserves someone to play with. Milo simply refuses to let his playmates grow old.
