“The others were taken by the darkness. Little Malachai invited it in.”

Little Malachai was the quietest child in the nursery.

He never cried when the candles went out.
He never reached for the nanny when thunder shook the windows.
He only sat in silence, clutching the ornate golden rattle that no one remembered giving him.

Inside its delicate cage rested a tiny, withered figure—a smiling creature with closed eyes and folded hands. The nanny believed it was merely an unusual decoration.

The other children knew better.

Every night, when the house had fallen asleep, Little Malachai removed the pacifier from his mouth and whispered names into the rattle. Then he shook it once.

The figure inside opened its eyes.

He shook it twice.

Something began crawling beneath the nursery floor.

He shook it three times—and before morning, another cradle stood empty.

The adults searched the corridors, the cellar and the frozen gardens beyond the house. Yet no one ever suspected the silent infant sitting innocently among the abandoned toys.

After all, babies could not summon demons.

But Little Malachai had never been possessed.

The presence inside the rattle had answered his call willingly—and with every soul it carried below, the child’s power grew stronger.

Only the nanny understood what he had become.

One night, she entered the nursery and found Little Malachai waiting for her. His empty eyes followed her across the room as he slowly raised the rattle above his head.

The creature inside its cage was smiling.

Little Malachai shook it once.

And from beneath every cradle in the nursery, something answered.
