I really like the tiny case for the Heltec T096. But I didn't want to have to rely on the spicy pillows and would rather have the option to use an 18650 battery.
When I looked for an option, they were all fairly large, sharp-edged, or had the antenna sticking out the top. That made them less than ideal for carrying around.

So my goal was to incorporate these features:

  • Small-sized to fit in the hand

  • Rounded edges to be easier to carry

  • Fit a Muzi antenna partially recessed

  • Fit protected and unprotected 18650 batteries

This is the case I came up with. Note that because of the fillets on the edges, there can be some stringing.

*The only part that requires supports is the main body. You may get a warning that the battery cover needs supports; it does not.*

I've printed this in both PLA and PETG with no issues. The battery compartment has some extra width to accommodate different-sized battery holders, using some double-sided tape to hold it in place can help if it rattles.

Note: After printing out the parts you will want to free up the cantilevers that help the battery cover stay in place. The easiest way to do this is to press each back corner of the battery cover against a hard surface until it breaks free.

I designed the buttons to align, with the taller button on the USR button and the reset button recessed to help prevent accidental resets.

BOM:

Assembly:

  • Attach the JST connector to the battery wires (you may need a soldering iron for this)

  • Feed the battery connector through the hole near the opening for the USB connector and seat the battery holder

  • Feed the SMA connector through the hole and secure it with the screw provided, and attach an antenna

  • Press the antenna cable into the groove under the shelf that holds the node

  • Attach the IPX connector to the Heltec board

  • Attach the Battery connector to the Heltec Board

  • Align the buttons to the lid part

    • Note that the crossbar is offset from the center, so the crossbar only fits in one way, and that will make the taller button be on the usr button

    • If you have difficulty keeping the buttons in place, a small piece of tape can help

  • Attach the Cover to the Body with the 4 M2.6 x 8mm screws

  • Insert a battery and slide the battery cover on

You should be good to go.
