SpeedScope - Find Your Best Print Speed
Compare six print speeds in one model and find the wall finish you like best. SpeedScope includes flat walls, sharp corners, curves and a small wavy side panel. The open bottom saves filament.
Designed for PETG with a 0.4 mm nozzle, for use with different printers.
Choose your speed range
20-70 mm/s: start here if you are unsure.
80-130 mm/s: compare faster everyday settings.
140-240 mm/s: for printers and filaments suited to higher speeds.
The numbers on the model show the target speed, increasing from bottom to top.
For OrcaSlicer, choose a 3MF file. It includes the speed changes and keeps your own printer, filament and print profiles. For other slicers, choose an STL and set the speeds manually using the instructions below.
Print settings
Setting | Recommendation |
|---|---|
Material | PETG |
Nozzle | 0.4 mm |
Layer height | 0.20 mm |
Walls / perimeters | 2 |
Supports | Off |
Scale | 100% |
Orientation | Upright, rim on the bed |
Extra brim | Start without one |
Temperature and cooling | Your usual PETG settings |
Printer speed multiplier | 100% |
Use your normal PETG temperature, cooling and infill settings. The centre stays open. Start without an extra brim; the model already has a small adhesion rim. Keep the printer's speed multiplier at 100% during the test.
These are recommendations. The 3MF changes speeds inside the six test levels; it does not apply the other settings for you.
Size: approximately 106 x 42 x 49 mm.
Example estimate for the 20-70 version: 15.5 g of PETG and 1 hour 27 minutes with 0.20 mm layers and two walls. Check your own slicer for the time and material required by your profile.
Quick start in OrcaSlicer
Select your usual printer, filament and print profiles.
Drag in your chosen Orca_SPEED_ONLY.3mf. If asked, choose "Import geometry only" or "Import model" to keep your profiles.
Expand the model in the Objects list. Keep all six speed modifiers attached. These boxes control speed changes; they are not extra parts to print.
Slice the model, then select "Speed" in Preview. Check the long wall at each numbered level before printing.
If several levels show the same speed, your cooling, filament flow or printer limits may be slowing them down. Try a lower range instead of raising those limits just to match the numbers.
The files were checked with OrcaSlicer 2.4.2. Use the STL with manual speed settings in other slicers.
How to read your print
Flat wall: rough patches, uneven lines, gaps or unwanted changes in shine.
Three vertical ribs: look for repeated ripples on the flat wall beside them. This is often called ringing or ghosting.
Corners and curves: check for rounded tips, bulges, missing material or uneven curves.
Wavy side panel: compare how neatly the gentle bumps and dips print. These waves are part of the design, not ringing.
Compare the middle of each level under the same light, away from the seam and the change between speeds. Choose the fastest level whose finish you like, leave a little margin, and try that setting on a normal print.
Manual setup for STL files
Skip this section if you are using the Orca 3MF with its six speed modifiers.
The STL contains only the shape. Keep the first 0.8 mm at your normal speeds. Above that, add six height ranges in your slicer:
Level 1: 0.8 to 8.8 mm
Level 2: 8.8 to 16.8 mm
Level 3: 16.8 to 24.8 mm
Level 4: 24.8 to 32.8 mm
Level 5: 32.8 to 40.8 mm
Level 6: 40.8 to 48.8 mm
Use these speeds from level 1 to level 6:
20-70 model: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 mm/s.
80-130 model: 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 mm/s.
140-240 model: 140, 160, 180, 200, 220, 240 mm/s.
Apply each level's speed to walls, small perimeters, infill, solid/top surfaces and gap fill where available. Keep your usual travel, cooling, acceleration and material limits. Check the Speed preview before printing and keep the original scale.
This model compares wall quality; it does not automatically calibrate the printer. Actual movement may be slower around corners or on short sections.
