I’m bringing a very interesting game to my portable games project. It’s called Dou Shou Qi, also known as Jungle Chess. It is a traditional Chinese strategy game for two players.

Instructions

Pieces

On each side, there are 8 pieces representing different animals with varying ranks. Higher-ranking pieces can capture any piece of equal or lower rank. However, there is an exception: the elephant cannot capture the mouse, but the mouse can capture the elephant. The animal ranks, from strongest to weakest, are:

8 - Elephant

7 - Lion

6 - Tiger

5 - Leopard

4 - Dog

3 - Wolf

2 - Cat

1 - Mouse

The pieces are placed on their corresponding marked positions on the board (numbers have been marked on both the board's starting positions and the pieces themselves).

Moves

Players take turns moving, with White moving first. A player must make a move during their turn. Each piece moves vertically or horizontally (not diagonally). Pieces cannot move into their own Den (circular square).

There are special rules regarding water squares:

The Mouse is the only animal that can move onto water squares.

The Mouse cannot capture an Elephant or another Mouse directly from the water.

The Mouse can capture another Mouse if both pieces are in the water.

A Mouse on land can attack another Mouse in the water.

The Lion and Tiger pieces can jump horizontally or vertically across a river. They move from a square on one side of the river to the nearest non-water square on the other side. Such a move is not permitted if a Mouse (whether friendly or enemy) occupies any of the water squares. The Lion and Tiger are permitted to capture enemy pieces using this type of jump.

Captures

Animals can capture enemy pieces by "eating" them. A piece can capture any enemy piece of the same or lower rank. Additionally, a player can capture any enemy piece located on one of the trap squares (red ones), regardless of its rank.

End of the Game

A player wins the game when one of their pieces reaches the opponent's burrow (circular space) or the other player has no pieces left.
