A Stirling engine is a heat engine that converts thermal energy into mechanical energy using the cyclic compression and expansion of a gas, usually air or another working gas, at different temperatures.
Unlike an internal combustion engine, a Stirling engine does not burn fuel inside its cylinder. Instead, heat is supplied from an external source, and cooling removes heat from another part of the system.
The model demonstrates how a temperature difference can produce reciprocating motion, which is converted into continuous rotation using a crankshaft and flywheel.
Main working principle: Heating the enclosed gas causes it to expand, while cooling causes it to contract. The engine's piston mechanism converts these pressure changes into mechanical movement.
Step 1 — Prepare the components
Identify the base, cylinder assembly, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, flywheel, fasteners and other supports.
Check that all parts are clean and free of damage.
Gather the appropriate tools, such as spanners, screwdrivers, pliers and lubricants specified by the design.
Step 2 — Assemble the base and frame
Place the base on a flat, stable surface.
Attach the support brackets and frame to their designated positions.
Tighten the fasteners securely without overtightening them.
Check that the frame is level and rigid.
Step 3 — Install the cylinder assembly
Secure the displacer cylinder and hot-end chamber to the frame.
Fit the displacer inside its cylinder, ensuring it moves freely without rubbing against the walls.
Install the power piston and its cylinder, where applicable.
Check that the working spaces are properly sealed where required.
Step 4 — Install the crankshaft
Position the crankshaft in its bearings or supports.
Ensure it rotates smoothly without excessive friction.
Align the crankshaft with the piston and displacer mechanisms.
Step 5 — Connect the rods
Attach the connecting rods to the appropriate pistons and crankshaft pins.
Set the displacer and power piston timing according to the engine design.
Tighten the joints while preserving the movement of the linkages.
Step 6 — Attach the flywheel
Mount the flywheel on the crankshaft.
Secure it with the specified retaining hardware.
Check that it is properly aligned and does not wobble or contact the frame.
Step 7 — Check the completed assembly
Rotate the flywheel slowly by hand.
Observe the movement of the pistons and displacer.
Check for binding, loose joints, interference and air leaks.
Correct any alignment problems before attempting to operate the engine.
Step 8 — Test the engine
Place the engine on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Apply heat to the designated hot end and ensure the cold end can dissipate heat.
Allow a temperature difference to develop, then gently turn the flywheel if required by the design.
Observe whether the engine continues rotating independently.
Safety: Use only the intended heat source and follow the model's design specifications. Hot surfaces can cause burns, and exposed flywheels and connecting rods can cause injury. Keep hands, loose clothing and combustible materials away from moving and heated components.
