CODEX // N.O.M.A.D.
The Offline Knowledge System
What if a computer didn’t live on a desk — but on a bookshelf?
CODEX // N.O.M.A.D. is a book-shaped computer built around a repurposed Framework Laptop mainboard. Closed, it is designed to blend naturally into a bookshelf as an old reference volume. Open it, and the book becomes a fully functional touchscreen computer and offline knowledge system.
The idea behind CODEX is to combine two very different ways of preserving and accessing knowledge: the book and the computer.
Inside, a Framework mainboard provides the computing platform while an integrated touchscreen forms the opposite “page.” The electronics are hidden beneath removable cover, with cooling, cable routing and access to the expansion ports incorporated into the structure of the book.
The enclosure follows the same principles that make Framework hardware so interesting in the first place: reuse, repairability and upgradeability. The mainboard can be removed, serviced or replaced without destroying the enclosure, and the major printed components are designed to be individually replaceable.
The N.O.M.A.D. connection
At the heart of the concept is Project N.O.M.A.D., an open-source project for creating a self-contained offline digital library and knowledge system.
The combination felt particularly appropriate for this project. Open-source software provides the knowledge platform, a repurposed and repairable Framework mainboard provides the computing platform, and a 3D-printed enclosure turns the two into a physical object designed to remain accessible, serviceable and upgradeable.
It also changes the purpose of the build. CODEX isn't simply an enclosure for an old laptop motherboard. It is intended to become a self-contained digital library — something that can sit quietly on a bookshelf, ready whenever it is needed.
Project N.O.M.A.D. is the library.
CODEX is the book that contains it.
Closed, it is a book.
Open, it is a computer.
Inside, it is a library.
