A low tray for a toolbox or workbench drawer that holds one drive size of hand sockets, shallow and deep side by side, one column per size. Shallow sockets stand on round pins sized from the ISO drive square. Deep sockets that would hit the drawer above recline at one angle worked out from your drawer height: the drive end rests low against a heel stop, the open end is raised toward you over a V notch, so a fingertip slides under it to lift it out. Every size is recessed in a flat strip in front of its socket. Four ready presets plus an OpenSCAD customizer for your own set and drawer.

Validation status (please read): digitally validated only: CAD geometry and interface checks on modelled socket stand-ins, slicer checks without supports, and height calculations. It has not been physically printed or tested: the pin fit on real sockets, the fingertip lift (bare and gloved), label legibility and behaviour when the drawer is opened hard are unverified. Print the pin fit coupon for your drive first. All pictures are 3D renders or diagrams of the CAD model; the sockets and the drawer in them are modelled stand-ins, not real tools or a photo of a print.

Features

  • Shallow and deep sockets of the same size together in one shallow drawer: in a 2 in (50.8 mm) drawer the default 3/8 metric 8-19 mm set (12 shallow + 12 deep) is calculated to top out at 42.5 mm when pushed home, under the 45.8 mm lid-clearance line.

  • The recline angle is solved from the drawer height (13.75° for the default set in a 2 in drawer). The generator's fit report marks every socket as stand / recline / lie and flags the one to measure.

  • One-fingertip lift for deep sockets: the open end sits about 15 mm clear of the floor at its rim (about 13 mm a fingertip in).

  • Pins keyed to the ISO 1174-1 drive square, not the outside diameter, so for the pins colour bands and brands do not matter. The pins and V notches guide; they do not grip.

  • Sizes recessed 0.8 mm in a flat strip in front of each socket, so no multi-colour printer is needed (legibility not yet checked on a print); optional one filament swap.

  • Compact: the default 24-socket tray is 310 x 120 mm; with the deep sockets lying flat instead the same set needs about 15 % more drawer area (calculated).

  • Designed to print flat without supports (checked in the slicer); long trays split into bed-sized tiles (two for each ready preset) for 220 mm-class beds.

The default tray needs a drawer at least 50.5 mm tall; its tiles are 142.9 x 119.8 x 20.0 mm and 167.0 x 119.8 x 20.0 mm. Print times and grams are PrusaSlicer 2.9.6 estimates on a generic 220 mm-class printer profile, not measured prints.

Which files?

  • Pin fit coupon first (one per drive: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2): pins at -0.40 / -0.30 / -0.20 / -0.10 / 0.00 mm on the ISO drive-square minimum. If the -0.20 pin takes your tightest socket freely and the socket sits flat, the ready trays fit; otherwise make your own tray in the customizer with the fit value your coupon picked.

  • Ready-to-print PrusaSlicer projects (socket_tray_recline_..._complete*.3mf and socket_tray_pin_fit_coupon_*.3mf): open, slice, print; each was checked by slicing the saved project. Presets with two tiles come as plate 1 of 2 and plate 2 of 2 (the 1/4 set fits one plate).

  • STL files (..._tray_1 / _tray_2 per preset, plus the coupons) for any other slicer.

  • socket_drawer_tray.scad: the OpenSCAD customizer (see Customizing).

Print settings

  • PETG recommended (tool drawers in hot garages; PLA softens around 55 °C, so avoid PLA in hot garages or vehicles; PLA is fine in climate-controlled rooms). PETG on smooth PEI or glass needs a release aid such as glue stick.

  • 0.4 mm nozzle (label strokes, comb teeth and ramp ribs are sized for it), 0.20 mm layers (label depth 0.8 mm = 4 layers), no supports.

  • Print as oriented: floor on the bed, pins, comb bar and heel rail up; coupon flat.

Use

  1. Measure the drawer's clear height at the tightest point over its full travel, from the floor or the top of a liner.

  2. Put the tiles side by side in the drawer, label strip toward the front. No assembly.

  3. Shallow sockets: drop them onto their pins. Deep sockets: put the drive end down at the back against the heel stop, push it back until it drops behind the small ridge, then lower the open end over its V.

  4. To take one out, slide a fingertip under the raised open end, lift and pull forward. Push each socket home before closing, and close the drawer slowly the first time.

Customizing

socket_drawer_tray.scad (desktop OpenSCAD) lets you set: drive (1/4, 3/8, 1/2), sizes, which sockets you have per size (both / shallow / deep), optional measured outside diameter and lengths per size, drawer height, lid clearance (5 mm), bed size (200 mm), pin fit (-0.40 to +0.15), gaps, recline on/off and the part to export. Where a recline does not fit (very shallow drawers, very mixed lengths) the deep sockets lie flat in troughs; in tall drawers they stand. Entering the caliper diameter and length of the socket the fit report marks MEASURE THIS ONE gives the best angle. Checked with desktop OpenSCAD 2021.01 (renders took from 14 s to about 5.5 min per tile, 4 renders running in parallel, on the test PC); online customizers were not tested.

Limitations

  • Not physically printed or tested yet (see Validation status).

  • Default socket dimensions are the ISO 2725-1 maximum outside diameters and Type A lengths; deep lengths are manufacturer-datasheet defaults (1/4: 50, 3/8: 64, 1/2: 83 mm). Real sockets are usually smaller.

  • Reclined deep sockets use the drawer's height on purpose. A socket put back short of home is calculated to stay under the drawer above (default set: at most about 49.5 mm in the 50.8 mm drawer), but push each one home.

  • The pins and V notches guide, they do not retain. A brisk drawer opening can slide a deep socket forward until it rests against the shallow socket in front of it; with that shallow socket taken out, a hard yank can tip the deep socket out of its cradle: push it back before closing. Not slam-proof.

  • Deep sockets with a slimmer nose end than drive end (common on small sizes) rest on the ramp rib rather than deep in their V: they sit lower (still at least 12 mm of fingertip room, calculated) and have a little side play.

  • SAE sizes use conservative default diameters (the ISO row of the next larger metric size); caliper values give a steeper angle.

  • 3/8 sets in 1.75 in drawers: the deep sockets lie flat (a recline would not leave 12 mm of fingertip room under that lid).

  • No magnets, wall mounting or anti-slip features in this version; use a drawer liner.

Pictures

All pictures are 3D renders of the CAD model or diagrams made from it, not photographs: the loaded default tray (cover), the tray in a tool-chest drawer, a close-up with one deep socket lifted, a side-view diagram of how it fits the drawer, the two empty tiles, the three drive sizes loaded, a dimension card, the pin fit coupon, the fit report the generator prints and what to measure. The sockets and the drawer are modelled stand-ins.
