Compact Hex Grip — by Andris85
Turn an L-shaped hex key into a compact, removable T-handle. Two PETG halves capture the short leg and fasten with ordinary M4 screws and nuts. No glue, heat-set inserts or snap clips are needed.
DEFAULT SIZE
For a 5 mm hex key with nominal 50 × 25 mm external dimensions. Handle: 60 mm wide × 21.5 mm maximum height × 15 mm thick; the side sections are 15 mm high. The shaft is offset 8 mm to clear the left fastener.
FIT AND CLEARANCE
The straight hexagonal seat is 5.6 mm across flats: 0.6 mm total clearance, not per side. The short leg has 2 mm extra length allowance. A relieved bend pocket accommodates different bend shapes. CAD checks on the fixed shell found no interference for reference bend radii of 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 mm, and separately for a 27 mm outside short leg. Actual keys can differ; this is not a universal-fit guarantee.
HARDWARE
2 × M4 screws with flat-bearing cylindrical heads and 2 × standard M4 hex nuts. Head pockets: Ø8 × 4 mm. Nut pockets: 7.3 mm across flats, 3.4 mm deep. M4×12 is a nominal starting length and projects approximately 1 mm beyond the outside face. Check your hardware and trim longer screws if needed. Countersunk heads require a matching seat.
PRINT SETTINGS
PETG; 0.20 mm layers; 5 perimeters; 45% infill; 5 top and bottom layers. Print both halves outside-face-down, with the key cavities facing up. Supplied STL and generic 3MF are oriented for printing. Check screw/nut recess roofs in your slicer: local supports may be needed. This version has no sacrificial bridging membranes. The 3MF contains geometry and placement only, not a printer-specific profile.
ASSEMBLY
1. Remove supports and clean the seats.
2. Insert the key and dry-fit both halves. They should close without being pulled together with the screws.
3. Insert the nuts and screws, then tighten evenly without crushing the PETG.
CUSTOMIZATION
Editable Fusion files and STEP geometry are included. A separate Fusion source contains only the two printable halves, with favorite parameters for hex size, clearance, handle width, nominal short-leg length and extra length allowance. M4 hardware stays M4. Do not scale the STL to change key size: this also changes hardware seats.
The source is prepared for browser customization, but no verified online configurator is available for this release yet. Print the supplied 5 mm files directly without CAD, or edit the Fusion source. STEP does not retain the Fusion parameter history.
PROTOTYPE / TEST STATUS
Earlier iterations were physically printed. This exact V7 release has not yet been confirmed by a physical fit and load test. It has no torque rating. The compact design does not maintain 4 mm walls everywhere: approximately 3.67 mm remains per side through the bend-pocket thickness and 2.2 mm between a head-pocket edge and the handle end. Recheck clearances after dimension changes. Do not use an extension lever.
