Spin~ to win!

With lessons from building Modular Fiddles and related instruments for the past few years, I turned Cecilia Immergreen's violin into a playable electric violin.

I consider this design experimental, so build it at your own risk. All parts should fit on a Prusa i3-sized printer, except for the bout which either needs to be printed on an XL bed or split in the slicer.

You need two 8 mm dia. x 330 mm carbon fiber rods for reinforcements and some M3 screws for the electronics enclosure and chinrest. You also need to install a pickup bridge. I will release the pickup shown in the photos at a later date.

The chinrest in the photos is from the Modular Fiddle project.

This project has taught me several important things about building violins for 3D printing:

  1. The violin should be as light as possible to prevent neck strain, without sacrificing tuning stability or rigidity.

  2. You can use infill settings to make the lower part of the violin denser, to shift weight onto your collarbone. This way

  3. The angle and height of the fingerboard matters for playability, especially if you are playing in high positions. In this violin the neck/fingerboard are a bit too thin, so you have to reach further to press the strings down.
