Why I made this:
I find myself needing funnels a fair amount, and it's always nice to have the right funnel for the task at hand.
I've printed plenty of vase mode funnels, but each time I design them the same way - port, mouth, make sure overhangs aren't too shallow for vase mode printing.
Figured this would be a good time to implement a parametric generator with replicad!
Why this is cool:
replicad is very, very cool. It is rad to be able to provide a parametric generator without requiring people to open a CAD program at all.
Vase mode is always cool. So efficient!
How to use this thing:
Download and unpack the html.zip file. I have to zip the replicad html since I can't upload bare html, I think.
It'll open in a browser!
There's a few parameters you can tweak (see screenshot)
Mouth taper
The taper angle of the wide opening from the print bed
Probably good not to exceed 45 deg.
Port X
OD (X axis) of the narrow end of the funnel.
Make this the same as Port Y if you want a circular port.
Port Y
OD (Y axis) of the narrow end of the funnel.
Make this the same as Port X if you want a circular port.
Mouth X
OD (X axis) of the big end of the funnel.
Make this the same as Mouth Y if you want a circular port.
Mouth Y
OD (Y axis) of the big end of the funnel.
Make this the same as Mouth X if you want a circular port.
Port straight length
How long of a straight section you get at the narrow end of the funnel before it flares out.
A note on Mouth dimensions:
The mouth can't be smaller than the Port, but I couldn't figure a way to drive them parametrically based on Port size.
If you make the Mouth too small, the model will turn orange to indicate an error, and then you should go fix the Mouth dimensions so that it's happy again.
Printing tips:
You'll export a solid body 3D, so then use "Spiral Vase" in your slicer of choice to turn this into a usable funnel.
Hope it's obvious, but do not have any solid bottom layers :)
Make the walls as thick as you want by means of adjusting the extrusion width!
I was curious about doing spiral flutes on funnel to get a "vortex" effect, and I took a shot at this by using the fantastic BumpMesh texture generator from Stefan of CNC Kitchen.
I don't remember exactly what settings I used, but I provided both the base funnel as well as the BumpMesh'd STL.
I think I used "Fine Ribs" and did some rotation or something.
Enjoy!
