🐾 Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is a powerful, confident working breed from Germany, named after the old market town of Rottweil. Descended from drover dogs that accompanied Roman legions, it was used for centuries to herd and guard cattle and to pull carts loaded with meat for local butchers.
When cattle droving declined, the Rottweiler found new roles as a police, guard, and service dog. Today, it is admired as a loyal protector, a capable working partner, and a devoted family companion.
🐶 Appearance & Personality
Coat: Short, straight, dense, and coarse, with an undercoat on the neck and thighs. Always black with clearly defined rust to mahogany markings.
Build: Large, robust, and muscular, with a broad chest and great strength combined with agility.
Expression: Calm, noble, and alert, reflecting good humour and self-assurance.
Face: Broad head with a strong muzzle, almond-shaped dark brown eyes, and triangular ears hanging forward.
Tail: Carried horizontally as a natural extension of the topline where docking is not practised.
Temperament: Rottweilers are courageous, steady, and deeply loyal to their families. They are naturally watchful with strangers but affectionate and playful with the people they know and trust.
🎾 Activity & Companionship
Rottweilers need vigorous daily exercise, such as long walks, jogging, or structured play.
They enjoy obedience, tracking, herding trials, and carting, which put their working heritage to good use.
With early socialisation, they become loving, protective family members that form strong bonds with their people.
Consistent, positive training from puppyhood is essential to channel their strength and intelligence.
💪 Health & Care
Exercise: High — daily physical activity and mental challenges keep Rottweilers calm and balanced.
Coat care: Weekly brushing, with extra attention during seasonal shedding.
Diet: Quality large-breed food with controlled portions to support the joints and prevent excess weight.
Health: Typical lifespan is 9–10 years. Common conditions include hip and elbow dysplasia, osteosarcoma, aortic stenosis, and cruciate ligament injuries. Regular veterinary care helps Rottweilers stay strong, healthy, and active.
