Finally, I did my own battery storage in the style of a classic German beer crate (Bierkasten). There are many great designs already (CADGuys or baua1365s).
But I wanted for a long time to design my own version from scratch in FreeCAD with three goals:

  1. Stackable—crates lock onto each other, and AA and AAA crates share the same footprint, so you can mix them in one stack.

  2. No supports—all openings are designed for bridging and overhang-friendly angles.

  3. As little material as possible—open walls and thin dividers: about 20 g and 1.5 h per crate.

Versions

- AA crate: 12 batteries (3 × 4)

- AAA crate: 20 batteries (4 × 5)

- Outer size (both): 52.7 × 68.9 × 55 mm

Print settings

  • Material: PLA or PETG

  • Layer height: Testprints are with 0.2 mm

  • Perimeters: 2

  • Supports: none

  • Infill: 15 %

  • Brim: Outer brim recommended

  • Print upright, as oriented in the file

  • Print weight&time:

    • AA-12 batteries     19.8 g  1 h 31 min (MK4S)

    • AAA-20 batteries  23.5 g 1 h 50 min (MK4S)

Tip: Use different colors for charged / empty batteries or for AA / AAA – a stack of colorful crates looks just like the real thing.

Ready-to-print 3MF files are included. I'd love to see your makes—please post a photo!
