🐾 Irish Setter

The Irish Setter is an elegant, energetic sporting dog developed in Ireland as a gundog. It was bred to range widely across open country, locate game birds by scent, and then freeze or 'set' to show hunters where the birds were hiding.

With its glowing mahogany coat and joyful spirit, the Irish Setter is instantly recognisable. Today, it is admired as a devoted family companion, show dog, and field dog.

🐶 Appearance & Personality

Coat: Moderately long, silky, and flat, with soft feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail. The colour is a rich chestnut red or deep mahogany, sometimes with small white markings.
Build: Tall, lean, and athletic, with a deep chest and graceful lines built for speed and stamina. It moves with a free, flowing, ground-covering stride.
Expression: Soft, sweet, and alert, reflecting a kind and eager nature.
Face: A long, refined head with almond-shaped dark eyes and long, low-set, silky ears.
Tail: A tapering, feathered tail carried level with the back or slightly below.
Temperament: Irish Setters are outgoing, affectionate, and full of fun, and they love being part of everything their family does. They mature slowly and often keep a playful, puppy-like attitude well into adulthood.

🎾 Activity & Companionship

Irish Setters need generous daily exercise, including chances to run freely in a safe, enclosed area.

They love long walks, running, retrieving games, field trials, and canine sports such as agility.

Their gentle, friendly nature makes them wonderful companions for active families and usually good with children.

Training works best with patience, positive rewards, and short sessions, as these clever dogs are easily distracted.

💪 Health & Care

Exercise: High — daily running and active play keep them calm indoors.
Coat care: Brushing two to three times a week to prevent tangles in the feathering.
Diet: A high-quality diet for active large breeds, ideally split into two meals a day.
Health: Typically lives 12–15 years. Common concerns include bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and progressive retinal atrophy. Regular veterinary care helps keep Irish Setters healthy and full of energy.
