With the original buffer wheel, I had problems with the filament piling up on the innermost part of the wheel. This led to tangled filament and hence a lot more resistance for the extruder to overcome. Had a couple of prints ruined by this. In order to resolve this I made a wheel that has a slightly smaller diameter on the outside, so that the filament creeps outwards when there is tension on it. In my experience that is much more reliable, and I have not seen any tangled filament with this design.
