As the chair comes the back does not quite go up vertical and it can recline much further than most other office chairs. This adaptor extends the length of the piston allowing the back to become more vertical.

In use all the force is compressing the part so PLA should be strong enough. The only time when this is not the case is when pushing the chair by the back rest and hence the suggestion to print with 50% infill.
