Story:
Our bees needed some sugar water to boost their growth (they need about 8 grams of sugar per gram of wax) and survive the winter. We didn't own a hive that had a feeding system or similar so we had to create or own.
Function/Setup:
The tray is attached to the rims via wood screws no thicker than 3mm and then placed in a hive like a traditional frame. Then sugar water can be filled into the frame and the bees will easily climb down the walls and feed on the food. This creates an easy solution to feed your bees lots of liquid (or solid) without the hassle of drilling a hole in the hive roof.
Print:
The tray should be printed with 4 walls/permieters to ensure strength and watertightness and any high infill. After its printed I recommend water testing it overnight and to check that it definitely doesn't leak. Leaks and holes can easily be fixed by pouring molten wax into the floor of the tray.
The rims should also be printed for a high infill and wall count - they need to be able to hold the weight of the fully filled tray.
Other:
To print the frame you need a printer that has at least 440mm of space across the span of its bed (I had to print it diagonally).
Try to keep the tray made out of safer plastics such as PETG and PLA with do not harm the beed.
The frame is designed for a ½ meter long hive (the frame is 490 mm to be exact) so check your hive's length before you print this.
Please contact me if you encounter any issues with printing or use, I love to improve my designs, thank you!
In the future I may add more sizes for different hives - currently I only own a ½ meter long one to test the design.
