Update June 27, 2022 : Unfortunately, after using these for a while I have found that while they work initially, after a while they apparently absorb enough liquid that they no longer float well. So I will have to flag these as FAIL until for this version. I'm leaving this print published as a guide for others who might try this.
My chainsaw requires both oil and gas (petrol). The tanks for these are black plastic, so it is very difficult to see the fluid level inside the tank, and as a result I am too often overfilling and getting messy spills.
These simple floats do what the name implies - they float on top of the gas or oil and make the fluid level much more visible. The included photos show the fuel tank for my chainsaw (with and without the float).
A brief web search indicated that PETG is resistant to gas/petrol and oil for the intended use. To use these, simply print as many as needed and drop one into each tank. Easy enough to remove if necessary.
Print Instructions
These are 18mm diameter so they should fit most tank openings, but they are easy enough to scale if necessary.
Print in PETG using the 3mf or gcode files provided; in general :
- 2 perimeters
- 0% infill
- adaptive layer height (optional)
A bright/light color works best.
