My girlfriend saw this and immediately hated it. Why would you plant something in a giant cup?? But the more I worked on it, the more it grew on me. I was hooked. It's probably Stockholm syndrome. Feel free to add a comment if you want to give us your thoughts on this one.
About the design
I was bored and just noodling around. I was actually trying to make something completely different but it somehow turned into this cup. This planter features aggressive vertical corrugation that gives it a lot of strength, and it has a drainage hole with a large attached dish.
The base is smaller than the large mass of soil high above, so this planter can be a bit top heavy. Do plan accordingly and maybe keep it away from the cat. Luckily, this alocasia is also toxic to cats, so really it's just great decision making all around. You know, I'm starting to think my girlfriend was right 🤔
Print instructions
This one is a really fun print. However, here are the settings you'll want to use to make sure you get the best quality.
- Spiral vase mode / Spiralize outer contour: turn this on, this is how the whole magic works
- Layer Height: 0.3mm (not required, but I like printing fast)
- Line Width: 0.8mm (this is important, and yes, you can do that with a 0.4mm nozzle, just trust me)
- Bottom Thickness / Bottom Layers: 1.2mm or 4 layers at 0.3mm layer height
- Printing Temperature: +10 to +15 degrees your usual temperature (I print PolyTerra at 200, but print these vases at 210 to 215 depending on my mood)
- Flow / Extrusion Multiplier: 110% to 120%, or 1.1 o 1.2 (this will help with making the models more watertight, among other things)
- Minimum Layer Time ("slow down if layer print time is below" in PrusaSlicer): 20 seconds (this is important to cool off the skinny part of the goblet, especially with most stock coolers)
- Wall Speed: 30mm/s (you can play with this... slow it down if you have extruder issues)
Notes
The print in the photo was printed on an Elegoo Neptupe 2 with a 0.4mm nozzle in Overture Matte Grass Green, which is actually a neon green that has nothing to do with grass. Yay naming! If you want your plant to feel like its won something, you can print this in gold! Or maybe bronze if you don't want to boost its ego too much.
