This model is about 120mm wide and requires printing:

  • 12 pentagons
  • 20 hexagons
  • 90 clips

This was printed at .2mm layer height using a .6mm nozzle on my M3 in PLA with 20% infill. It used approximately 150g of filament. I've included a 3mf file for half the shapes in case you're feeling brave and want to try two 7 hour prints off the bat!

Faces clip together in a straightforward fashion. I would do a test print of 2 faces and a clip to ensure everything is snug - a little bit of play is okay but if the clip is too loose the faces will fall off.

Though this model is small enough to fit on most print beds printing the faces separately gives a much nicer surface finish, you can do the bottom layer as Concentric or Hilbert curve and it looks pretty nice. Another possibility is to remove the top and bottom layer to expose the infill - I would do a minimum of 6 perimeters for this.

This was made in OpenScad using the fabulous code from Kit Wallace - the technique should extend to other solids there so I may release the code if I ever clean it up. If you're fine with the messy version get in touch.

My future plans are to create a 3x larger version of this to use as a lampshade.
