Description:

You can use this ghoulish bookmark in books, newspapers, and magazines to show your Halloween spirit. This is a 7 cm by 3.2 cm by 0.2 cm design that is sure to scare your friends!

Lesson Plan and Activity:

Our goal was to re-create a pre-made ghost without knowing the ghost’s measurements. To start, we measured the pre-made ghost with rulers. Then, we created a 1:2 ratio scaled drawing of the ghost and wrote down the steps we used to draw the ghost in the Construction Instructions section. After that, we created the hand-drawn ghost in Solidworks. Finally, we revised our measurements to make them even more precise and printed out the ghost bookmark.

Construction Instructions:

To design the ghost, we first measured the pre-made ghost and found its dimensions. We found that the dimensions were 6.7 cm by 3.1 cm by 0.2 cm.

Then, we sketched out a 1:2 scaled drawing of the ghost.

These are the steps we used to create the ghost drawing shown above:

  1. Make a construction rectangle with the center at the origin.
    1. Dimensions for everything are listed on the drawing above.
    2. From here on out, work on the left side of ghost face
  2. Make Horizontal Construction lines (from left side to center)
    1. Bottom of arch construction line - 2 congruent, horizontal
    2. Top of eye line - horizontal (snap to)
    3. Bottom of eye line - horizontal
    4. Top of mouth line - horizontal
    5. Mid-mouth line - horizontal
    6. Bottom of mouth line - horizontal
    7. Top of spikes line - 3 congruent, horizontal
    8. Mirror
  3. Make Vertical Construction lines
    1. Left bottom arch to bottom eye line
    2. Right bottom arch to bottom eye line
    3. Right top mouth to top spike line
    4. Left top mouth to top spike line
    5. Mirror
  4. End-end-height arch - 2x, congruent, to center
    1. Mirror
  5. Bottom spike
    1. Line 1 - from edge to (snap to) across from construction line 1
    2. Line 2 - from Line 1 to end of construction line 2
    3. Line 3 - from Line 2 to bottom of Vertical center line
    4. Mirror
  6. Making Eye
    1. Find center of construction box for eye
    2. Make the center radius circle with radius the length from the center of the box to the top center of the box.
    3. Make a circle tangent to the construction eye box.
    4. Mirror
  7. Making Mouth
    1. Make a construction line in the middle (center) of left and right vertical mouth lines and below top mouth horizontal line.
    2. Make line from bottom of 7a to center of mid-bottom-mouth line and bottom mouth line
    3. Offset line
    4. Mirror
  8. Adding Mouth Relations
    1. Left mouth and right mouth lines - parallel - Includes mirrored entities
    2. 7b line and 7c line - parallel - also mirrored entities

After that, we re-created the ghost in Solidworks using the steps above.

Finally, we extruded the ghost, engraved our initials, and printed out the ghost.

  1. Extruding Your Ghost
    1. Save your sketch by clicking the blue sketch icon in the top left of your screen.
    2. Select your sketch in the “Feature Tree”
    3. On the “Feature” tab (instead of the “Sketch” tab), select “Extruded Boss/Base”
    4. Change the dimension in the menu to 0.20 cm
    5. Click the green check mark
  2. Engraving Your Ghost
    1. Click the top face of your ghost.
    2. On the Sketch tab, select “Sketch” to start a new sketch.
    3. Draw a horizontal construction line from the left side of the inside of the ghost’s mouth to the right side.
    4. Select this line and click the “Text Sketching Tool”, (The capital A)
    5.  Type your first initial and change the font to “Impact”.
      1. Click the “Center Align” button
      2. Increase the size until the letters mostly fill the tab
      3. Repeat for the second initial (on a different line and sketch text)
    6. Save your sketch by clicking the blue sketch icon in the top left of your screen.
    7. Select your sketch in the “Feature Tree”
    8. On The “Feature” tab (instead of the “Sketch” tab), select “Extruded Cut”
    9. Change the dimension in the menu that has replaced your “Feature Tree” to 0.10cm
    10. Click the green checkmark
  3. Print out the ghost

Design Choices:

Next, we edited our measurements to make them more precise.

  1. At first, we made our eyes 0.7 cm wide, but they seemed too big, so we downsized them.
  2. Another error we came across was that the mouth was too thick. We originally made the thickness of the mouth 0.175 cm, but then changed it to 0.16 cm.
  3. We also realized that the eyes were too far apart. Originally, we made the eyes 0.6 cm away from their respective sides, but then changed it to 0.87 cm.
  4. The final problem we encountered was that when Solidworks mirrored the arcs at the top of the ghost, the arcs did not keep their specified size. Instead, we had to create horizontal and equal lines underneath the arcs and set them equal to one another. Then we had to mirror each arc with their respective lines separately over the center construction line.
