Print in the orientation from the .stl file. It is not a trivial task to get sharp points out of a 3D printer, so if yours come out a bit blunt you could use a nail file (or similar) to sharpen the teeth.
Usage: stick it on your roll of tape, pull an end of it over the edge and tear off the excess. This definitely requires a bit of training, but it works, albeit not terribly well.
The next bit of tape you need will be at the ready. You can use the cutouts on the sides to lift the tape off it, or you can also just lift the helper off the tape and use it to pull the tape off the roll. You can use it to place the end of the tape where you need it and then peel the helper off it. Then stick it on the roll under the loose bit of tape and use the teeth to tear it off, and you're back to the starting configuration.
I had also envisaged a use where you can use it to hold the roll while you're rolling off the tape, but that doesn't work, because the sides of the sticky tape are sticky. Who would have guessed that.
