At regular intervals (no less than desired layer height), you add a square rotated 45 degrees touching the edges. This causes slicers to draw straight lines across the holes, avoiding problems like the infamous “drooping rings” present in the original Gridfinity models
- To use this to convert a model in Tinkercad, first import the model to convert.
- Fill the old holes using cylinder objects, it can help to turn the model “translucent” with the color selector.
- Then bring this in, center it on a gridfinity socket. Turn it into a “hole” object. Make sure the magnets and object are both at horizontal plate 0, or the hole may be too shallow or be recessed inside the object.
- (Glue in 1x1 file) Press Ctrl+D to get extra copies for each row or column of the item, after the 2nd is positioned, further Ctrl+D should auto position.
- (Glue in 1x1 file) Then select the whole row or column, and duplicate that set, position, and again repeat with auto position.
- Once you have all the new holes, combine the whole thing and export.
If you want to see an example of a bin using this in the slicer, any of my models labeled Magnet+ can be downloaded and sliced in a slicer.
1x1 is 6.5mm “glue in” holes, per original GF spec.
8x8 is 6mm “friction fit” holes, similar to the “Screw Together” baseplate variant.
